Upcycle to Make a Ring

Zakka Life Crafts has very simple project instructions for upcycling the plastic tab from a milk or juice container into a ring. The project is so simple even a young child can easily do this.

The only thing I'd add to her instructions is the possibility of cutting the round circle into different shapes for more variety. An adult should do the cutting and the edges of cut portion should be sanded down so they are not sharp.

  3. I like this! I'd make one for myself if I could... Too bad the containers in my country don't have that inside capping! They use a different design here.

Crocheters also use the rings to crochet around and make tiny wreaths as tree ornaments. But they also use larger rings from plastic (milk) bottles for that. Here's an example of my own: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=27433928

What puzzles me though is whatever happened to the old fashioned containers that you had to cut or tear open at the corner. I think it's just another sales trick that adds nothing really useful to the product. Just more waste and waste of resources. As if the cartons themselves aren't waste enough! You can't even throw them in the paper recycling bins because of the plastic coating.

  15. It is exciting to be able to recreate from the old and also helpful for the environment specially when it comes to plastics because it clogs the earth.

  20. Hahaha very creative but I'm not sure I know anyone who would actually wear this ring. Are these things also thrown out by the bottle depots? I know the caps are at least.

  29. When you are a recycler, you make the environment a better place. When you recycle the world is a cleaner place and you are reusing the things that you were just going to throw away.
